The Southern California area surrounding Paramount has a long, interesting past as theland has changed ownership several times and includes a great war. There arelots of great historic attractions in a close proximity, so you can easily makea day trip out of all of the historic sites.There are several historic water vessels on display in the Paramount area. Starting in Long Beach, you can visit the Scorpionsubmarine and the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary is a historic ocean liner, whichwas also a World War II troopship. The ship has been in the process ofrestoring since its final voyage in the late 1960s. Now you can visitrenovated cabin rooms, isolation wards, machine rooms and you can even dine inthe restaurant or stay over night in a First Class State room. The Scorpionsubmarine is located nearby in the Long Beach harbor. This 300 feet long Russian submarine isa true piece of Cold War history. Admission to this historic site includes atour of the torpedo room, crew's quarters, galley and top secret communicationscenter.Also in Long Beachare two historic ranchos; the Rancho Los Alamitos and the Rancho Los Cerritos.The Rancho Los Alamitos historic ranch and garden is located just between the Pacific Coast Highwayand the San Diego Freeway. Recently renovated in 2012, this historic sitesprovides a glimpse into life in the Southern Californiaarea during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Rancho Los Alamitos site isopen Wednesdays through Sundays from 1 to 5pm and admission and parking areboth free. Located on Virginia Road in Long Beach, just 16 minutes northwest of the Rancho LosAlamitos and 15 minutes south of Paramount,is the Rancho Los Cerritos historic site. The city of Long Beach was actually founded on the 27,000acre ranch which was known as Rancho Los Cerritos in the 1880s. This piece ofland has had a significant history, dating all the way back to the earliestNative Americans who used the land in 2-5,000 B.C. The area has had manydifferent inhabitants and has served many different purposes. Today guests cantake a guided tour of the various historic buildings and sites at the RanchoLos Cerritos Historic Site. Just like the Rancho Los Alamitos, admission andparking is free and the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 5pm.When visiting Paramount, youwill more than likely be taking a trip up to the Hollywoodand Beverly Hillsarea. If youre interested in history you will definitely want to check out theHollywood Forever Cemeterywhile there. Located on Santa Monica Boulevard between Wilton Place and Gower Street, the Hollywood Forever Cemetaryserves as the final resting place for some of the most famous entertainersincluding Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, Bugsy Siegal, Cecil B. DeMille,Gertrude Astor, Jayne Mansfield, Douglas Fairbanks and many others. Thecemetery is open to visitors from 7 am to 6pm everyday of the week.On Main Streetin Downtown LA, just west of the LA Park Plaza, you will find another historiclandmark, the Nuestra Señora La Reina de Los Angeles Church,which was constructed in 1822. The church, which is still in operation todayand provides guests with informative tours, was constructed on top of theSpanish settlement and adobe houses that were constructed during the mid tolate 1700s. Unfortunately, none of the original structures from that period arestill standing. However, as the historic site has been renovated over the yearsmany historical artifacts and items have been restored and are discussed indetail on the tour.One last historic site that is a must-see when visitingParamount is the Point Fermin Lighthouse, located on San Pedro Bay, just a halfhour south of Paramount. This beautiful lighthouse was constructed in 1874 andwas continually in operation until 1941 after the Pearl Harbor bombing. Admission is free and the museum is open from 1pmto 4pm Tuesdays through Sundays, but when planning your visit keep in mind thattours are only offered at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. After your tour, you can enjoy apicnic or relax in Point Fermin Park, which has picturesque views of the bay.
