This ancient yet modern city is beautifully placed at the foot of the Calderona Mountain Range which in turn makes it one of the more sought after rural areas. To get you started the first thing you need to do is study the layout of the streets and where they lead you to. The biggest street in Sagunto is El Carrer Major; its starting point is the Puerta Ferrisa and finishes at the main square with its traditional porches and doors. The next street is La Calle de Cavallers or, as it translates Street of Gentlemen, and the medieval square of La Plaza del Peixcateria. When youre ready to visit the Roman theatre, the La Plaza del Castell leads you there. Listed below are some of the more important historical monuments you should put on your list of places to visit.The Roman Theatre is a good place to start your journey as it will give you an idea of the towns beginnings. The theatre was built sometime in the first century on what is now castle hill. Situated on the north side just below the summit it had an amazing seating capacity of approximately 8,000 spectators. It was of such importance that the Spanish government declared it a national monument as early as 1896. Your next stop should be the Castillo or what remains of this once glorious fortress that witnessed a number of battles waged over this area. The castle was built by and looked after by a number of different cultures including the Iberos, Romans, Goths and Arabs.There are two churches for you to visit the first one is the Salvador Church built in the 13th century in a Gothic style. This is one of the best examples of this style of buildings in the Valencia Province: so much so that the Spanish government declared it a national artistic monument of historical importance in 1997. The next church on the list is Santa Maria Church also built in a Gothic style during the fourteenth century. At 353 metres in length and 73 metres wide it represents one of the largest churches of its time.
