This was possible in the colonies even if one came from a humble cottage in England.Trains were not entirely luxurious. Some third class carriages were reserved for the supposedly inferior. It was when Mahatma Ghandi, a British educated lawyer but an Indian, tried to board the luxury coach of a train in Durban that he was ejected on racial grounds. This small incident had a direct link with the end of the British Raj in India.Had Ghandi been allowed to board the first class carriage in Durban he would have experienced space and attentive service. Without experiencing the humiliation of being ejected on racial grounds he might not have been inspired to embark on his campaign of passive resistance which led to the British withdrawal from India. History might have been different. A journey that emulates the sort of luxury that the privileged enjoyed whilst others clung to the outsides of carriages can help people to imagine the past more accurately.Tourists to India and South Africa can now travel on period carriages that replicate the sights sounds and textures of luxury train travel in colonial times.
