Its located close but not too close to the well known Roman sulphur baths of Hedionda, you wouldnt want to be to close as the high sulphur content of the water makes it smell like rotten eggs. The sulphur content is the result of a spring flowing from a limestone outcrop above the valley. The baths came into being some two thousand years ago when the Romans discovered the sulphur springs.In the beginning the baths consisted of a number of arched chambers of which only four exist today. Proof of more chambers can be extrapolated from the water channels present today indicating a much larger facility. It is said that Julius Caesar himself was cured of a skin condition when bathing here during his tenure as governor of southern Spain between 63 and 60 BC.At some point in time an attempt was made to preserve the baths in doing so a concrete canopy was built over the existing original Roman baths. This unsightly addition can be seen from the entrance if you are taking a plunge in the sulphuric waters. The first chamber you enter is a small one with an archway leading to a much larger chamber further in. if you are not put off by the smell of rotten eggs you can enjoy the cool, murky, skin curing waters of these baths.If you plan to visit the baths on a Sunday come early as they are popular on this day especially in the afternoon. Families with children bring picnics with them and tend to spend the entire day with the children taking over the baths. Whats interesting is this is still a working archaeological site with a site master surveying the site using his camera to document his findings.It is sad to say but the site is in a state of disrepair due to its location in the municipality of Casares with access only from Manilva who have no financial interest in the site. It has been suggested a luxury hotel be built here but what about the smell.Nearby on the other side of the river is whats left of some 18th century farm buildings which funny enough was constructed using Roman masonry from the baths. This would indicate a settlement was nearby used to service the baths. If you venture down the valley about seventy five metres you will find a single arched aqueduct used to irrigate the fertile valley. All indications tell us this was a Roman system improved on by the Moors as they did all over the Iberian Peninsula.If you have a cycle or motorbike the site is easy to reach from your ANDALUCIA VILLAS. Take the N340 to Gran Bar to the west of Sabinillas. All you have to do now is follow the road in need of repair up the valley passing under the new toll road.
