And they are an excellent complement to experiencing the living, breathing culture on the street, giving it context and sometimes contrast. For travel in places with a particularly rich history, a visit to a museum adds an extra dimension to the entire experience. In Lima, visitors on a Peru vacation will find some of the best museums in the country. The Museo Larco is one of the oldest museums in Peru and has a truly impressive collection of artifacts extending to more than 3,000 years ago. The museum grounds themselves are quite lovely with gardens surrounding an 18th century mansion that once housed viceroys. The holdings in the interior of the museum are just as glorious and include gold and silver from ancient Peruvian cultures, as well as a large collection of erotic art. This museum is unique in that visitors can enter the repository to see an additional 45,000 pieces. Other museums in Lima include the Museo Religioso de la Catedral, the Museo y Catacumbas de Arte Religioso de San Francisco, the Museo Nacional de Antropologia y Arqueologia Julio C Tello, and the Sala Museo de Oro (Gold Museum). In Cusco, there are a variety of museums to suit all interests. In addition to the more conventional historical museums such as the Museo de Arte Precolombino, the Museo Historico Regional, and the Museo de Arte Religioso, there are also the Choco Museum, focusing on the regional production of chocolate, and the Coca Museum that does the same for the coca leaf. Another fascinating museum in the Museo Machupicchu at Casa Concha dedicated to the study of Machu Picchu.
