Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the beautiful destination of Peru. Machu Picchu and other ancient sites are gaining in popularity all the time. Because of this, the government now issues permits for Inca Trail journeys for better control. The trail connects some of the most important archaeological locations of the Inca empire. It has become so popular that the government has found it necessary to limit the number of people who are allowed to traverse it annually in order to ensure the integrity of the ancient structures. During the month of February, the route is closed entirely so that maintenance and conservation projects may be performed. Part of the reason it is such a favored trek is because while traversing the 43km path, tourists are exposed to the amazing scenery of the breathtaking Andes mountains. Along the way it passes through both jungle and rainforest and provides high altitude views above the valleys below. Those who wish to embark on this journey need to take care to plan ahead. A typical trek can be as short as two days, or as long as seven. Permits go on sale in January but are limited to no more than 500 people per day. This total encompasses a staff of nearly 300 which will only allow up to 200 tourists. The trekking calendar posted by the government will show how many passes are being allowed each day. The first round of permits are awarded via a lottery, but all the others will be given in order of application. Open dates rarely last long so it is important for those wanting to make the trip to apply as early as possible. Another reason to plan ahead is that there are very strict restrictions placed on access to the trail permits.
