Much of Limas prestigious history can be found within the historic Pueblo Libre. Founded in 1557 as Magdalena Vieja, the district was renamed in 1821 by Jose de San Martin. Pueblo Libre was once home to the revolutionaries San Martin and Simon Bolivar, the father of the Americas. Their colonial mansion has been transformed into the Museo Nacional de Antropología tracing Perus history from the Preceramic period to the 19th century.The National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru is the largest and oldest state museum in the country. The museum contains an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to over 10,000 years ago. Visitors can experience some of the countrys most important and perfectly preserved ceramics, textiles and paintings in a chronological gallery with an English-speaking guide. The entry fee is S./ 10 for adults and S./3 for students.The Bolivar Plaza in Pueblo Libre is cited as the main reference point in a district considered a middle class residential community filled with luxurious parks and reconstructed Colonial architecture. History has not been lost in this district and you can get an up-close view of it at the Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera or simply Museo de Larco. The museum is located in an 18th century viceroys mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens. Founded in 1926 by Rafael Larco Hoyle, an avid collector of pre-Columbian ceramics, the Larco Museum features some the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru. The museum continues to be run by the Larco family and showcases over 3000 years of ceramic displays from pre-Columbian period. Puerto Libre is famous for its historical connotations such as La Cruz del Viajero, a symbol of faith and protection the conquistadores brought with them from Spain. Theres a sense of tranquility found here which is hard to find in other parts of the capital, as the vast amounts of parks makes it a popular place for an evening stroll. Like most other Lima districts there are a few restaurants which travelers cant afford to miss, El Bolivariano and the historical Antigua Taberna Queirolo are the most popular for their typical creole cuisine. A recommended dish is the papa rellena (Peruvian stuffed potatoes) with a glass of pisco mixed with soda. Pueblo Libre has remained an attractive destination for tourists on their Lima travels because it offers a historical yet relaxing ambiance.
