But while it is the home ofpainting, certainly, this is not the only form of art to thrive within theFrench capital.Admirers of sculpture are infor a treat, especially if they decide to visit the iconic Auguste RodinMuseum, which is full of neoclassical works and fascinating insights into theartist’s life.RodinBelieved to be one of theworlds greatest sculptors, Rodin has been credited with renewing sculpture andgiving it a more prominent place within modern art. Born in 1840, Rodin wasschooled traditionally, took a craftsman-like attitude to his work, anddesperately sought academic recognition. However, Rodin was never accepted intoParis’ paramount school of art. Instead, he was viewed as somewhat ofa rebel, with his turbulent clay surfaces and pocketed textures.Rodin's style clashed withthe preeminent figure sculpture tradition and he faced much criticismthroughout his life for not accepting the decorative, formulaic and thematicworks being made brought by the other sculptors of his time.He modelled many of hispieces on the human body, infusing realist themes, focusing on honesty andindividuality in relation to forms. Rodin veered away from mythology andsculpting only the famous and rich, following a more modern approach andrespecting physicality instead.Controversy was always closeto the artist, but he stuck fast and refused to change his style, eventuallyearning commendation from the French government and the artistic community. By1900,Rodin was a world-renowned sculptor, earning wealthy private clients whowould pay impressive sums to own an example of his work. Towards the end of hislife, Rodin mixed almost exclusively with high profile intellectuals andartists, marrying his lifelong companion Rose Beuret in the final year of boththeir lives.After his death, his legacyremained solid as he cemented his name among some of the world’s bestmemorable sculptors. He was also well known outside the visual arts community.Musee RodinWith such popularity in Parisand further afield, it only made sense for a museum of his work to be opened.In 1916, he handed his large collection over to the government, which includedboth his sculptures and drawings and following his death in 1917 at the age of77, his work was immediately underway to showcase his achievements.The Musee Rodin opened to thepublic on August 4th 1919 and contains a staggering number of marble, bronze,plaster, terracotta and wax sculptures. It also houses a wide selection ofceramics, paintings and drawings on the walls, as well as works from Monet,Renoir and Van Gogh which were from Rodins personal collection.Located in Hotel Biron, themuseum and garden are beautiful to behold, with surprises around every cornerand abundance of stunning designs to catch the imagination of visitors.
