You will be glad to hear the tours are still in operation. You see, Arizona's South Rim is temporarily closed because it's part of Grand Canyon National Park. The main gates are located there and they are closed. Luckily though, the South Rim aerial tours are still in operation. See, the aircraft take off from the Grand Canyon National Park Airport, and this airfield sets outside of the National Park's boundaries. Also, the government doesn't own the airspace above the Park. Also, at the West Rim, tours are going on just as they were before the shutdown. Grand Canyon West isn't affected by the government stalemate because it's privately owned by the Hualapai Indian tribe. So the West Rim isn't part of the National Park and under government control. South Rim FlightsAir tours at the South Rim include airplane and helicopter flights. The plane tour lasts 50 minutes and covers the South Rim, North Rim and everything up to the Park's eastern boundary. You get to see a whopping 75% of the Park. The chopper tours of the South Rim are available in a long flight that lasts nearly and hour and a short one that lasts about half that long. The long chopper tour covers the same flight path as the airplane tour and lets you see more of the Park. It's more expensive than the plane tour, but the extra money is well spent. Try to get a tour on an EcoStar 130 if you can because they are great for sightseeing and will enhance your flight. Vegas Based FlightVegas-based travelers are lucky because the West Rim isn't affected by the government stalemate. All the tours to the West Rim are operating on a normal schedule including air and bus tours, and rafting trips, just keep in mind rafting trips always close for the winter in mid-November. You will run into a snag if you try to take a land or air tour from Las Vegas to the South Rim because those are not in operation. Once the stalemate's over they'll start up again. So don't let the shutdown keep you away from the Grand Canyon because there are plenty of ways you can still tour the majestic wonder.
