To see the true majesty of the National Park, I highly recommend taking one of the deluxe tours on Grand Canyon helicopters. Seeing the canyon from above allows you to take in the beautiful natural formations it would otherwise take you days to reach. When you take a chopper tour, you can easily see why the Grand Canyon has been declared one of the Natural Wonders of the World.Deluxe chopper tours are available at the West Rim and South Rim. Helicopters going to the South Rim take off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan, Arizona and tours to the West Rim take off from airfields in the Vegas area. Helicopters do not fly from Las Vegas to the South Rim and there are no flights that go between the two rims. South Rim HelicoptersThere are two flight options at the South Rim. The longer one is best because it lasts nearly an hour, takes you over to the east edge of the Park and the North Rim, and includes a swoop through the deepest part of the canyon called the Dragoon Corridor. You will do a fly-over of Grand Canyon Village too. Among other things, you'll see Imperial Point, the Zuni Corridor and the Painted Desert during one of these flights. West RimIt takes about 45 minutes to take the chopper ride from Vegas to the West Rim. Before arriving at the rim, these air tours pass over Hoover Dam and scenic Lake Mead. A couple of things make the West Rim special. Helicopters are allowed to land on the canyon floor there, it is prohibited elsewhere in the Park. So you can take a helicopter tour that includes landing on the canyon floor for a champagne picnic!If you want a fun-filled day, choose the tour that lands at the top and bottom of the canyon. It includes a smooth-water float trip down the Colorado and VIP access to the fabulous Grand Canyon Skywalk. Some other high points you don't want to miss include Eagle Point, Hualapai Ranch, Guano Point, and the Indian Cultural Center. Truthfully, though, the Skywalk is the big deal here. And there is good reason. It is the world's biggest glass cantilevered bridge and you can peer down 4000 feet below you while standing 70 feet beyond the canyon rim. There are professional photographs available for you to buy since you won't be allowed to take your camera or smart phone on the bridge. The photos are amazing and they make great mementos of your trip. The ChoppersThe Grand Canyon helicopters used for deluxe tours are superb. You will probably get to ride on an EcoStar 130. They're ultra-modern and their passenger cabins are much larger than those of other helicopters. They also offer terrific climate control, wraparound windshields and stadium-style seating. So, is riding in an EcoStar 130 worth the price of an upgraded tour? You betcha! When you tour the Grand Canyon, you might as well be comfortable so your trip is more enjoyable. It does cost more to upgrade, but even so, you can get discounts on the cost.
