For many people, a trip to Machu Picchu tour is the event of a lifetime. The breathtaking sight of the Inca citadel built audaciously on the top of a mountain is truly something that has to be seen. As of July 2011, the Dirección Regional de Cultura (DRC), the agency is charge of regulating admission to this historic site, instituted some changes to tickets. In addition to the regular entrance, there are 3 other types of entrances that travelers organizing a Machu Picchu tour should be aware of. Machu Picchu: The regular entrance admits travelers for one full day to the main part of the Inca citadel. This includes all the areas covered by a regular guided tour of Machu Picchu. This includes the temples, sanctuaries, and residences of the urban and agricultural sectors. For their religious significance and astronomical functions the following treasures should not be missed: the Intihuatana (Hitching Post of the Sun ), the Principal Temple, the Temple of the Sun with its circular tower, and the Room of 3 Windows. Travelers wishing to hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku; the entrance to MaPi from the Inca trail) or to the Inca Bridge may do so with this ticket. Huayna Picchu: This short mountain rises approximately 1,000 feet (300 m) above the main part of the ruins. Before July 2011, obtaining one of the 400 daily permits to do this climb was on a first come first serve basis, but now the 400 daily tickets are issued for an additional cost on top of the regular entrance fee. The 400 tickets are divided into 2 groups of 200 each for the following time slots: 7:00 am and 10:00 am. In addition to the spectacular birds eye view of Machu Picchu and the Urubamba River valley below and an excellent view of Salkantay in the distance. With this ticket, travelers can also get to the Temple of the Moon on the opposite face of the mountain. Montaña Machu Picchu: A less popular and more difficult climb is to the top of Montaña Machu Picchu. Like the previous hike, an additional cost is required and must be paid at the time of purchase of the entrance ticket. This approximately 90 minute hike rewards climbers with rare views of the Sacred Valley that are glimpsed by few.The number of total tickets issued for entrance to Machu Picchu is 2,500. This includes the 800 combined tickets allotted to Huayna Picchu and Montaña Machu Picchu. At the time of this writing (June 2012), prices for tickets are as follows: Regular entrance 128 Soles; HP 152 Soles; Montaña MP 142 Soles. Tickets can be purchased in person at DRC offices in Cusco or Aguas Calientes or by visiting the DRC website at machupicchu dot gob dot pe.
