There are several reasons why theColca Canyon in Peru is becoming one of the top attractions in South Americatravel. For those who are not in the know, the Colca Canyon is Perus versionof the Grand Canyon, but with some superlative features, discussed below.Located in the Andes, a visit to the Colca Canyon is the highlight of anArequipa tour. The White City is situated about 160km (100 miles) to the southeast from Chivay, the biggest town and transit hubof the canyon. Even the journey between Arequipa at Chivay is quite spectacular at Patapampa Pass the altitude is a break-taking 4,800 m (15,800 feet) abovesea level and from the Mirador de los Volcanes (Volcano Lookout) travelers willenjoy views of the awesome 6,000 meter volcanoes that dot the landscape. The most impressive thing about theColca Canyon is its depth. While the Grand Canyon plummets to 1,800 meters (or6,000 feet, about a mile), the Colcas depth more than doubles that at 4,160meters (or 13,640 feet). While the U.S. canyon seems to plunge down almostvertically and has sides that are mostly bare, the latters slopes are moregradual and the inhabitants, since many centuries ago, have built terraces onwhich they cultivate various sorts of agricultural products. Another difference is thatlivestock, including llamas and alpacas, are also raised in Colca, especiallyat higher elevations where crops grow with difficulty. The differences betweenthe canyons extend to the floor elevation of each. GCs paltry altitude of 800m (2,600 feet) holds no candle to elevations that rollercoaster-like losses andgains in elevation. The Colca Canyon is hilly, very green just after the rainyseason, and has landscapes that change from puna (high altitude grassland wherealmost nothing grows) to the agriculturally productive canyon floor. A Colca Canyon tour can take manyforms depending on your interests. For travelers short on time, a one day tour ispossible, but it involves a very early morning departure from Arequipa and alate return. A more common option is a 2 day tour, which allows travelers todescend a bit into the canyon and spend a night there, visiting the hot springsas an option. Both tours stop at the Cruz del Condor, a lookout point where youcan watch condors glide on thermal drifts. Adventure travelers can also trekthrough the canyon, either with an organized tour or independently and for anynumber of days depending on how much of the canyon and how many towns you wantto see.
