If you're staying in one of the excellent central hostels in Paris and want to get the most out of your visit, there are many different ways to get around. Travelling on buses, taxis or the Metro are all options, but this is a city much better explored on foot. You'll see so much more under the power of your own feet, and be able to experience this wonderful destination in an entirely different light.Get Up and Going EarlyThe central hostels in Paris are conveniently located, so you can set off as early as you like – and, in fact, the earlier the better. Strolling around the streets of the city as they stir to life is a real pleasure, and you'll be able to see it as the locals do, rather than abuzz with hordes of tourists. Without the distraction of too much traffic and too many pedestrians, you'll be able to wander around marvelling at the stunning architecture and wide avenues. The Champs Elysees is a wonderful place to explore in the early morning, but any of the little market streets in the city provide a different kind of pleasure. On the right bank of the Seine, Rue Montorgueil is a fascinating place for your morning coffee and croissant, or for somewhere a little livelier you could head to Café Beaubourg, to people watch over the piazza in front of the Pompidou Centre.The Surrounding NeighborhoodsOf course, the iconic churches, museums and monuments in the centre of the city are all well worth a visit, but when you're exploring on foot you should also take time to get out and about to explore the surrounding areas. Many locations on the outskirts of the city are leafy and peaceful, making for a lovely morning ramble. The Canal Saint Martin is just such a place and is perfect for a long, leisurely stroll. At Republique, as the canal leads underground, you can continue on the promenade at street level, ending up in Place de la Bastille.Whimsical Ile-Saint-Louis is a tangle of charming cobblestoned quays, and from here you'll get some wonderful views of most the city’s intricate architecture. If you are staying in one of the hostels in Paris during summer, you can take a walk along the Pompidou Bypass, which is closed to traffic on Sundays and public holidays. You'll share the space with rollerbladers, skaters, joggers and cyclists, who all have right of passage along here at this time. For a month - between July 15th to August 15th - sand, beach chairs, and other seaside features are installed, turning it into ‘Paris Plage’ – a real life beach.There are plenty of free walking tours available in the city, and if you're staying in one of the hostels in Paris, staff will be able to point you in the right direction of the best ones in the area.
