Basilica di San Francesco – Aka the Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, this massive cathedral is comprised of two churches - each adorned with frescoes and Gothic architecture. It's a must-see site within easy access of your group accommodation in Assisi.2. Duomo di San Rufino – Also known as the Assisi Cathedral, this site is dedicated to Saint Rufinus of Assisi, and is the cathedral where Saints Claire and Assisi were baptized. The semi-circular arches reflect the cathedral’s roots in Romanesque architecture, while multiple friezes and colonettes decorate the entrances. 3. Basilica di Santa Chiara – The Basilica of Saint Clare's faded walls are now a stark reminder of the beautiful frescoes that have been lost due to the ravages of time and neglect. However, many relics are still contained within the basilica – most notably the remains of St Clare herself.4. San Damiano – This convent is where Saint Clare built the Order of Poor Ladies – later renamed to the Order of Saint Clare in her honour. The quiet, peaceful and humble hut-shaped façade of the convent belies the beautiful frescoes contained within.5. Tempio di Minerva – This former temple was dedicated to the Roman goddess of wisdom, but now houses the Santa Maria sopra Minerva church. Still, the Corinthian columns decorating the façade give the modern-day church a taste of history dating back to the Roman era.6. Santa Maria delle Rose – This particular monastery is one of the more surprising choices on this list, thanks to the unique and inspiring exhibits combining the artistic elements of music and sculpture.7. Oratorio di Pelligrini – This small church belies the beautiful frescoes within, which surround the small altar. One particularly compelling aspect of this site is its dedication to the pilgrims wishing to pay homage to the remains of St Francis of Assisi. (Many of whom stay in the local hostels offering group accommodation.)8. Santa Maria Sopra Minerva –Saint Mary above Minerva is a major Dominican church that blends a tight Renaissance façade with a spacious Gothic interior filled with vaulted arches. Despite the name though, the church was actually built over a temple to the Egyptian Goddess Isis – not the Greco-Roman Goddess Minerva.9. Eremo delle Carceri – This hermitage is where Saint Francis of Assisi found the necessary silence and isolation for quiet prayer. Nowadays, Franciscan friars maintain the church and monastery while offering semi-guided tours to interested visitors. 10. Il Paradiso Assisi – This is not exactly a religious site per se, but it is a deeply spiritual one if you are looking for some respite from the social ambience of your group accommodation. It's a great way to simply relax and replenish your soul among tranquil groves and lush woodland.Keep all these sites in mind and you’ll be able to substantially expand your spiritual and religious knowledge of Assisi.
