One of the prettiest beaches in Goa, Anjuna is also safe for swimming. But it's neither the scenery nor the swimming that brings the crowds to Anjuna — they come to see what gives Anjuna its scandalous reputation! Anjuna's notoriety is well deserved. Capital of trance music and rave parties, the most hip and happening place in Goa, full moon nights feature acid parties and raves that attract crowds of young people to its sandy shores.Anjuna elicits a mixed response, people either crave to get there or ensure they keep well away. But looking beyond the psychedelic scene, Anjuna is a picture perfect idyll — the archetypical tropical beach of soft sands, coconut palms, cool drinks and calm seas. Sadly, it does not have accommodation to match. Which is why, except for a few grungy looking oddballs, not many people choose to stay around Anjuna. The few guesthouses and hotels in the village try hard but don't really have much to recommend them. Rented rooms for longer stays are available in homes in the village bylanes, and are good as it gets in Anjuna. The other accommodation available falls under the bare minimum, unfurnished and crude category!But Anjuna's bars and restaurants make up the shortfall - traditional and western cuisine concocted from ultra fresh fish and fruit are the hallmark of the open air, bamboo and palm leaf shacks. The beachfront bars are more permanent establishments with regular clientele of locals and foreigners. The music is trendy, the booze un-watered, the ambience friendly and laidback!Acid parties and flea markets aside, other diversions at Anjuna include excursions to the classic 1920 Portuguese style heritage home in Anjuna village and further north to Chapora Fort. The former is a stunner with turrets and tiled roof, stained glass windows, wrought iron balconies and ornate woodwork. Chapora is an Old Portuguese fort on the bank of the Chapora River and stands watch above the beach at Big Vagator.To AnjunaMapusa is barely 8 km away, easily accessed by bus, taxi or auto rickshaw. Anjuna is connected to Mapusa, Panaji and elsewhere in Goa by the local transport, the ubiquitous red and cream buses of the Kadamba Transport Corporation. Buses drop and pick up passengers at Starco, the self-appointed village square and bus stand with sundry shops and motorcycle taxi stand.Flea Market Wednesday morning and Anjuna gears up for a day of total frenzy. The quiet village road is busier than a city thoroughfare and the dust never dies down as buses belch smoke and spew out crowds coming in to Anjuna's legendary Flea Market. Tribal jewellery from Andhra, intricate hand embroidery from Gujarat, stoles and carpets from Kashmir, snake charmers, dancers and folk artists from Rajasthan, masseurs from Kerala — these are there for regular shoppers and a bit of bargaining can net a real steal. But the connoisseur comes to Anjuna looking for Goa Trance, dope from Benares, grass from Manali and drugs from wherever.
