Aspiring to become engineers is a commonality that is seen among thousands of students after completing their basic 12th standard, a thought which is resonated by parents also. They assume that the entry into engineering colleges in the 21st century will let their wards enter into lucrative jobs, at least in the software companies, if nowhere else. A boom in IT sector in the transition period between 20th and 21st century saw a lot of students being absorbed by the upcoming and already established IT companies. This was because certain policy making by the government in India, allowed new companies to establish themselves in the country and allow for expansion of IT related activities.But only a decade later, it became clear that job saturation, which escalated in early part of 21st century now, is percolating in almost every company. It is because of this reason that engineering graduates and post graduates are returning back to jobs in the core industries. People are joining public sector industries, railways, armed forces, government departments and various other sectors, where engineering jobs are found.The lure of engineering degrees is also coming down a tad, because the job scenario is making them divert their attention and thoughts to other courses. Much of the trend is also to be seen from the perspective of the lacunae that are present in the education system in these technical institutes. If these shortcomings are taken care of, then perhaps, passing out students will have a better chance to fare in jobs scenario in the country, and the fervour of engineering education will again get established.One of the many downsides of present day engineering education is the specialisation being introduced from the very beginning of BE and B Tech courses. Some policy makers and academicians might find such specialisations to be of benefit in the way that students learn about a particular aspect and can become proficient in that subject. But the demand of the times is again going back to the past, where competent engineers are required, who are good in every aspect of engineering and are able to manage problems of versatile nature. Furthermore, increased specialisation will be leading to a career growth stunt. Changing the subject into a specialised stream, keeps the students bereft of knowledge of various other applications. Having to choose a subject quickly enough, doesnt let students know for themselves, which would be the best choice for them. This can lead to a bad aptitude towards the particular specialisation, leading to back logs and lack of interest. Furthermore, faculty in engineering colleges is not being recruited with adequate aptitude and inclination towards teaching. It has been seen that those students, who fail to secure lucrative IT or PSU jobs, are trying their luck in colleges. They are also fresh pass outs, without adequate experience in teaching and explaining various modules to the students. Dearth in teaching faculties is also seen because lots of colleges are coming up, which are not able to provide good pay to their staff, negating any enthusiasm for such jobs. Today, India is gradually being recognised as a world power in education, especially in the higher education departments. More masters and post graduate courses are coming up in various universities. But, to improve the standard of engineering education, lacunae are to be removed and a structure policy system needs to be put in place. It is required that engineering graduates be provided with overall academic, personality and aptitude polishing, before they start contributing towards the building of the nation.
