Agricultural crop protection market is predominantly based on consumption of various pesticide products. Pesticides may be synthetic based or bio based depending on their composition. Any type of plant infestation comes under this category like weed, insects, fungus etc. With the varied product application areas both in crop and non-crop based plants, the industry is huge with high growth potential. Further, the scope of future growth is also immense given our increasing need for higher food production to feed the ever growing global population. The global volume market for pesticides is projected to reach 3.4 million tons by 2020 from 2.3 million tons in 2014, with a CAGR for volume growth being 6.2% between 2015 and 2020. The global value market for pesticides stood at US$54.8 billion in 2014 and is projected to reach US$81.8 billion by 2020, expected to register a CAGR of 6.95% between 2015 and 2020.Major market players involved in the manufacturing and distribution of pesticide products globally are American Vanguard, Arysta LifeScience, BASF SE, Bayer CropScience, BioWorks, Cheminova, Chemtura Corp, Chr Hansen, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, FMC Corp, Isagro SpA, Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha, Makhteshim Agan, Marrone Bio Innovations, Monsanto, Natural Industries, Novozymes A/S, Nufarm Ltd, Sumitomo Chemical, Syngenta AG and Valent Biosciences.Collaborative approach has been applied by the companies here to acquire greater share in the market place. Since the market place is dominated by some major players, collaboration with smaller and regional players helps them acquire a specific segment or a market. Companies tend to trust this strategy in matured markets like Europe and North America. These kinds of deals further help in development of innovative products and solutions achieved through joint R&D initiatives.Another well accepted strategy in the segment is either acquiring specific product lines or obtaining distribution and/or development licenses for the same from regional manufacturers. It provides bigger and smaller companies the right kind of exposure and expansion for their brand.In June 2014, Mitsui Chemicals Agro granted a development and license agreement to BASF for a new insecticide, dubbed MCI-8007, for commercializing the same globally, with the exception of Japan and other specific countries. This deal helps BASF in expanding its offerings, with the potential of jointly developing unique formulations for specific markets in the future.Some of the other significant collaborations in the pesticides industry over the recent past include the following:•     Expansion of an agreement between AgraQuest and Bayer CropScience for home and garden fungicides beyond the US to France, Italy, and Germany•     Collaboration between AgraQuest and DuPont for the development and distribution of a new biopesticide DPX RNP31 based on AgraQuest's patented microbial active ingredient, Bacillus pumilus QST 2808In 2014, Switzerland-based Syngenta led the global market for pesticides with a share of 22% and was followed by Bayer with a share of 18%. Usage of cooperative strategies among few close competitors helps the major players guard their position in the world market. Acuqisitions, agreements, approval and collaboration are the major activities seen here; however, product development while keeping an eye on regulatory constraints would help the industry players in the long run. The focus in this industry should be on Integrated pest management techniques and sustainable practices for an improved yield without harming the environment.
