Volcán Arenal, or the Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica´s highest rated tourist destination with thousands of visitors each year. The volcano was dormant for nearly 400 years, but since its eruption on July 29, 1968, Arenal has been giving regular shows spitting and spewing lava from its cracks. Some even say it is on par with watching Mother Nature´s fireworks show. In order to fully appreciate Arenal Volcano, most tourists come from San Jose to stay for at least one night in the quaint rural town of La Fortuna de San Carlos nestled at the foot of the impressive mountain. This relaxing town situated in the breathtaking Tilaran Mountains also houses a 230 ft. high waterfall called La Catarata de la Fortuna and numerous hot spring locations. The highest regarded of the springs is said to be Tabacón Hot Springs. It offers breath-taking views of orchids, lush foliage and an impressive waterfall. La Fortuna de San Carlos is a perfect launching point for a plethora of canopy tours, hikes, horseback riding, and canyoning tours. If you are into water sports try kayaking, canoeing, fishing or the boat tours. There are loads of combination tours offered that will combine your choices and some tour agencies even tailor your trip to your exact requests. Once there, most tourists will travel to the western side of the Arenal Volcano. From here there are trails that will take you into the rainforest. The Toucans Trail crosses over a lava flow that is a result of the 1992 eruption of the Volcano. Whichever trial or tour you do, you will no doubt have a guide pointing out highlights of the biodiversity offered by this unique destination. There are outlooks on trails with panoramic views of Lake Arenal and others with an outlook to see the lava flows coming streaming down the mountain side. Fantastic photos can be taken from Lake Arenal tours. You can either take a boat tour or you can work your own way there in a kayak or canoe if you are feeling up to it. The lake offers yet another unique perspective of the surrounding rainforest with a breathtaking view of the Arenal Volcano. If you want a change of scenery, take one of the river safari trips on the Peñas Blancas River instead. Also, bicycles are a popular form of transportation in the area and many bike tours around Arenal and La Fortuna de Carlos are available providing yet another perspective of your lush surroundings. Although the location is picturesque year round, April is the perfect combination of temperature and dryness for travelers seeking a ´comfortable´ weathered trip. If you are more interested in special festivals, you should try to book your trip for the ´Fiestas de la Fortuna´ The festival offers visitors a chance to participate in carnival rides, bullfights, great foods, craft shops, gambling tents and tented discos!
