I recently had the good fortune to work in Liverpool over a two years spell and in that time got to know the place and some of the people very well. I had worked in Liverpool prior to this about ten years earlier and the city centre is almost unrecognisable from then. Millions have been spent in Liverpool as a result of the City of Culture status in 2008 and is still being spent on improvements. New buildings are going up around the dock areas near to the famous Three Graces buildings and one has to wonder if it will ever end. Inner city houses that have been there for generations are also being pulled down to make way for modern living. The journey into Liverpool city centre from the M62 looks different almost every time you drive through as the landscape changes as a result of new developments.In the city centre there is the Liverpool One development which is a huge shopping complex that rivals any city in the UK and even Europe. My own city of Leeds was for years called the shopping capital of the north but I have to concede that Liverpool surpasses Leeds for shopping.The other great thing about Liverpool is that throughout all of the major developments, they have managed to maintain the character of the place. Liverpool is famous for some of its traditional pubs, especially around Matthew Streetwhich is famous for the Cavern venue popular with lots of great acts including, of course the Beatles. One obvious exception to how Liverpool has kept its tradition is that for some reason they decided that it would be a good idea to demolish the Cavern Club to make way for an air shaft for the underground system. People visit in their thousands each year to see where the Beatles played and are left confused when they get there and find its gone! Of course, the scousers, being very entrepreneurial have build not one but two other establishments on Matthew Streets to replace it. One, the new Cavern Club is said to be near as damn it exactly like the original with bands playing often. Liverpool is famous for its docks as it is the docks that made Liverpool a great city. It is said that 80% of all import and exports from/to the UK came via Liverpool at one time. The dock area is truly massive and it goes on literally for miles. What is a great achievement is that these dock areas have been regenerated to provide pubs, restaurants, museums and of course the Liverpool Echo arena named after the local newspaper. The arena is one of the UKs premier in door arena hosting great bands, ice skating, TV shows etc.In order to meet the demand for accommodation for all those that visited Liverpool during the 2008 celebrations, Liverpool built several new hotels. More are still being built and soon it will have its very first 5 star hotel on Dale Streetat the heart of the business quarter. When I stayed in Liverpool I opted for serviced apartments which I always find to be better suited for those on longer terms stays as it provides that home from home environment so often missing from hotel rooms. They are also more often than not cheaper than a hotel which makes them even more attractive. Liverpool has a surprising number of serviced apartments approaching about 30 different organisations. These are situated throughout Liverpool meaning that there is something for everyone.
