Hiking trails lead to numerous surrounding beaches and these can also be reached by boat or toured via schooner. Belying its idyllic setting, the island previously served as a prison housing some of Brazils most dangerous criminals and in the colonial period, as a place where slaves, pirates, and lepers all transited. In the 19th century, the island served as a quarantine center for foreigners attempting to immigrate to Brazil. Top activities at Ilha Grande involve outdoor recreation, including surfing and Lopes Mendes, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, diving, and hiking through the rainforest. Food specialties on Ilha Grande are mostly seafood based, including delicious stews. The main attraction is definitely the beaches, for which Ilha Grande is known as the Brazilian Caribbean. Rio de Janeiro is located 90 miles (150 km) to the north, while Sao Paulo is 270 miles (450 km) to the south. Ferries operate from Mangaratiba with a travel time under 2 hours. The Angra dos Reis port is a shorter distance.
