Addiction can be a terrible thing. Soon the drugs you use are not enough and you need more and more. So it is with Damages, the TV series that has allowed Glenn Close to receive an Emmy and Golden Globe for her starring role. Several of the writers and actors have received various nominations for the show.A high profile lawyer from Hewes and Associates, the revered and reviled Patty Hewes, is played by Glenn Close. Her character is one that is played to perfection, you can't help but love to hate her. And then Ellen Parsons, played by Rose Byrne, shows up. She's a recent graduate who many firms scout, but prefers to work for Patty Hewes. Their personalities are opposite from each other, but neither wants to be controlled. Several incredible performances are given as the characters progress through the story.The show has a dizzying array of flashbacks, forwards, and events happening now. Each moment is often an important piece of the plot so it is not a show you can miss without losing something. You have to stay on your toes to follow the zigzags all along the way. And it's important to be observant. Closely observe the neck of Saffron's shirt at the same time Ray Fiske does in the first episode, for example. There are times when a character will only be on the show for a moment, but they may come back later. And don't be shocked when one of the characters you love is lost. From show to show you'll never know who will make it to next week. Damages has a first season run of 13 shows, but only some of the starting cast will comeback for a second series.I wonder if my addition to Damages will keep going. Can the writers keep coming up with such great material? Could there be enough plot surprises to sustain any more seasons? We can only wish. TV will lose one of the best series to debut on the small screen in years if the writers and producers can match the quality of the first season in the second.HD has changed my whole viewing experience.
