When you join two pieces of metalto a third piece of metal that is a filler metal that is molten, you have atechnique called brazing. This type of welding is said to be versatile and thejoints that are brazed have a very strong tensile strength. One reason to usethis method is because it can make the two metals stronger when they are bondedthen when they are separate metals.  One of the good points for brazingis that when you have brazed the joints they will repel gas and other liquidsso that the metals can resist vibration and they do are not affected withchanges in temperature. They can also resist shock. Also, since the two metals arejoined they don't warp or distort but they are able to keep all theirmetallurgical properties. You will also notice that because the jointsthemselves are not melted, they come out very clean and you have a nice finish. Brazing is usually used for themanufacture of plumbing fixtures, for making tools, used in high qualityproducts for consumers and in heavy construction. You can use this process whenyou want to join two metals that are different. This is also a quick and verycost effective method.  When you are considering whatwelding process to use it is a good idea to think about the total project andwhat you want it to do. When you want a strong and permanent fixture thenbrazing is a better technique. One of the reasons this is a better technique isbecause it is more flexible than other forms of welding and you can make mistakesthat can be easily corrected and changed as you go.  Brazing can also be used with thin metalsbecause you won't have a lot of warping or distortion. You can also brazelinear joints a lot easier than with welding because the filler metal that youuse will automatically flow to the joint you are trying to bring together. There are three ways for you tohave the heat that you need for brazing. These three ways are: using a handheld torch, using a furnace or you can use an induction heating system. You canuse torch brazing for small areas, but you will have to practice this a bitbefore you do it on something important. The reason is because you have to havea steady hand and be able to control the movement of the torch.  There are basically three types ofbrazed joints: Butt joint -- this is when youhave two metals that you want to join end to end. This is a strong brazing whenyou have enough bond surfaces to work with. Lap joint -- this type of joint isused when the welder wants a strong bond. The two metals will be overlappedwhich makes a larger surface to bond, and a stronger bond. Butt-lap joint -- when these two types of jointsare brought together, they create one single thickness and a strength that isstronger then the two individually.
