The pocket watch was initially produced with or without cases. Thewatches without cases are called open-face watches while the ones with casesare mostly known as hunter-case watches. Besides, these two types, there wasanother pocket type watch which has a lid but the user can look at the time throughthe cover since it is partially covered with glass. The most ancient ones werekey-wind-set-time watches. There was a key to fix on the time-adjustment knobof the watch and then wind the time as well as set the time. To do this, theuser has to open the back of the watch and then grip the knob using the key ofthe watch.  The pocket watch produced during this time, had the key adjustmentknob in the front panel. Therefore, the user had to open the front panel aswell as the crystal glass of the pocketwatch to fix the key to the minute handle to wind and set the time.Later, the stem-wind or lever enabled time-set watches were available duringQueen Victoria’s time. The difference with this type of watch was they werewith in-fixed levers which can be used to wind and set the time instead ofusing a separate key. While with some watches, the front glass should beremoved to access the lever, others can be lever-accessible without removingthe glass. In addition, there was thenail-settable pocket watch. Withthis type of pocket watches, an easy accessible pin was available to set andwind the time. All most all the ancient pocket watches were jewelled ones. In amechanical pocket watch, thejewels were very small. More often the jewels used for this purpose weresapphires and rubies but other types such as diamonds and garnets were alsoused. Sometimes glass was also used. Nevertheless, these jewels were mostlyunusable as gemstones and hence, possessed little monetary value. Commonly usedtype in this regard were holed jewels and the arbour of the watch operates onthese jewels.  The reason for using holedjewels was they provide extremely hard yet a very smooth surface for runningthe arbour of the pocketwatch without friction when oiled. Rarely the running of the machinewas flawed due to jewelled surface. Nevertheless, after the 20thcentury, instead of using jewels, many manufacturers used and still usesynthetic jewels. Normally, a minimally jewelled pocket watch contains seven jewels. They comprise of two holedjewels, one roller jewel, two pallet jewels, and two cap jewels.
