在英格兰、威尔士和北爱尔兰，完成本科学位并最终获得荣誉学位需三年时间。而在苏格兰，学生要用三年的时间来攻读一个普通的学位，四年的时间拿一个荣誉学位。越来越多的学校都开设有四年制的课程，完成课程后可以拿到硕士学位。英国的学位没有统一的标准，各大学的教学方式也可能不一样。然而，多数大学都采用综合的教学方式，即授课、讲座和报告会结合的方式。讲座可以有很多学生参加，通常是在阶梯教室或大堂里举行，要求学生能够记录老师讲授的内容。报告会的讲员可以是一个或多个，学生人数相对较少。要求学生事先准备专题演讲以便小组讨论。参加授课的人数则更少，往往只有一名教员，针对四到五名学生。
