Award-winning writers join the line-up for this autumn's literary festival at the University of East Anglia.

The programme for the Arthur Miller Centre International Literary Festival ranges from novelist and film maker Michael Ondaatje, best known for the Booker-Prize winning novel The English Patient, and renowned playwright Stephen Poliakoff to former MP Roy Hattersley and mystery writer P D James, author of 19 books.

Prof Chris Bigsby, head of UEA抯 School of American Studies and festival organiser, said: 揥e're delighted to be able to offer such a range of distinguished writers, with writers coming from Canada, Egypt and the UK, and ranging from novelists and poets to playwrights and biographers, there should be something here for everybody in one of best programmes of recent years.?

Monday October 1: Michael Ondaatje Born in Colombo, then Ceylon, in 1943 Michael Ondaatje moved to England in 1954 and then Canada in 1962. He is a poet, novelist, film maker and editor. He is best known for The English Patient, winner of his third Governor General Award (the first two going to his poetry books The Collected Works of Billy the Kid and There抯 a Trick with a Knife I抦 Learning to Do), and the Booker Prize (the film version won nine academy awards). His new novel is called Divisadero.

Tuesday October 16: Nawal El Saadawi Nawal El Saadawi is a leading Egyptian writer. Born in a small village near Cairo, she qualified as a doctor and eventually served as Egypt抯 Director of Public Health, as position from which she was dismissed when she published a book about women and sexuality. She has also written novels, short stories and plays as well as autobiographical and non-fiction works, including God Dies by the Nile, The Hidden Face of Eve and Woman at Point Zero. She was imprisoned under Sadat. Three years ago she offered herself as a candidate for the presidential elections in Egypt.

Wednesday October 24: Doris Lessing Born in Persia (now Iran) in 1919, at the age of six Doris Lessing moved with her family to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She has lived in England since the publication of her first novel, The Grass is Singing, in 1949. She remains best known for The Golden Notebook but her many novels, widely translated, have established her as one of this country抯 leading writers, a fact recognised by the award of Companion of Honour. Her latest book is The Cleft.

Wednesday October 31: P D James P D JAMES was born in 1920 and worked for many years in the Civil Service. She has also served as a magistrate. Her first novel, Cover Her Face, which introduced the figure of Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard, appeared in 1962. Since then she has published a further eighteen novels (many of which have been adapted for television), including The Children of Men which inspired the 2006 film. In 1991 she was appointed Baroness James of Holland Park. Wednesday November 14: Michael Frayn and Claire Tomalin Playwright, novelist and translator Michael Frayn was born in 1933. His plays include Copenhagen, which won the American Tony Award as best play. His novel Spies won the Whitbread Novel Award. His latest book is a work of non-fiction, The Human Touch: Our Part in the Creation of the Universe (2006). He is also the author of the screenplay for Clockwise which starred John Cleese and has translated a number of works from Russian, a language which he learned during National Service.

Claire Tomalin is a graduate of Newnham College, Cambridge, and worked in publishing before turning to journalism, becoming literary editor of the New Statesman and the Sunday Times. Her biographies include her study of the relationship between Charles Dickens and the actress Nelly Ternan, The Invisible Woman, as well as studies of Katherine Mansfield, Jane Austen, Samuel Pepys (this winning the Whitbread Award as Book of the Year as well as the Biography Award) and Thomas Hardy.

Wednesday November 21: Roy Hattersley Roy Hattersley was born in 1932, served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992 and MP for Sheffield for 26 years. His books include Blood and Fire: William and Catherine Booth and the Salvation Army, John Wesley: A Brand for the Burning and The Edwardians: Biography of the Edwardian Age. His latest work is a study of Britain between the wars. He is also the author of Buster抯 Diaries.

Wednesday November 28: Stephen Poliakoff Born in 1952 Stephen Poliakoff began to write while at school and at university, dropping out of Cambridge before completing his degree. He was writer-in-residence at the National Theatre at the age of twenty-four and established himself first as a playwright, with plays such as Hitting Town and City Sugar. It was as a television playwright, however, that he became best known, beginning with Stronger than the Sun, Bloody Kids and Caught on a Train through to the recent Friends and Crocodiles and Gideon抯 Daughter.

Wednesday December 5: Michael Holroyd Michael Holroyd was born in 1935. His first biography was of the writer Hugh Kingsmill (1962). He followed this with works on Lytton Strachey, Augustus John and Bernard Shaw. He has also published the autobiographical Basil Street Blues and a study of the craft of biography, Works on Paper. He has also been an active campaigner on behalf of writers and was recently knighted for his services to literature.
