In 2010 there were two mobile phones that really captured the imagination of the public.  The Samsung Galaxy S proved immensly popular for the brand and sales figures reached 7 figures just a few months after the phones initial release.  By the end of the year this figure had grown to a massive 10 million worldwide.  The other popular handset was the superb Desire from HTC.  This phone was regarded by many experts as the best Android handset ever released.  Both manufacturers have hard acts to follow with these two phones but inevitably there successors have now been released, but with one clear winner on this occasion.Whereas the HTC Desire had the plaudits and the Galaxy S had the sales, this year it seems Samsung are set to clean up in both areas with the ground breaking Galaxy S2.  HTCs follow up model, the Desire S, is indeed an improvement on a great phone but Samsung have exceeded all expectations with their new release.  Both phones are pleasing enough on the eye but HTC seem to have played it a little on the safe side so the Desire S really does not look to different from many of the brands other models which in itself is no bad thing.  Samsung have taken a bit of a gamble by replacing the smooth curves found on the original handset with a more angular design which works surprisingly well with the large display.  In terms of the overall depth of the phone the Galaxy S2 measures in at a remarkable 8.5mm which is more than 3mm less than the Desire S.  HTC have opted to stick with the same size screen that was used in the original Desire handset on this occasion whilst Samsung have raised the bar and fitted a monster 4.3 inch panel into their device.  Normally this extra size would have a negative effect on image quality but Samsung have counter acted this by using the very latest Super AMOLED technology in the screen to give superb colour reproduction and vastly improved viewing angles.  The Desire S is is certainly one of the better screens available, just not up to the standard of what the Samsung can offer. When we take a look at the storage facilities on both handsets the Samsung Galaxy S2 once again flexes it muscles and makes the Desire S look distinctly average.  Both models offer ample random access memory with the 1GB found on the S2 topping the 768MB found on the Desire S but when it comes to storage memory the Samsung is streets ahead.  Storage memory has become vital on the modern mobile phone as it is where the users can store all manner of files from audio to photographs.  At just over 1GB the HTC user may have to rely upon the micro SD card slot for some extra space whilst the Galaxy gives users 16GB or 32GB straight out of the box.  This means many users may not even need to use the micro SD card slot, but it is on hand should the need arise.HTC have stuck to a tried and tested formula with the Desire S and the result is a competent smartphone.  Samsung on the other hand have really pushed out the boat and taken some risks and it has paid off.  The Galaxy S2 may well be the best phone of 2011.The Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Desire S are available now.
